It last steamed for BR in 1967.
After a further investment of close to £100,000 she has made her debut on the UK mainline in September 2016.

Always good to see a feature video of 76084. Can't wait to see footage from 4 Feb next year when she doubleheads on the main line through to Buxton!!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15349119605741445692noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8920774344886968587.post-41364955668682366952016-10-22T13:14:00.001-07:002016-10-22T13:14:17.091-07:00Double-headed Standard 4's Leave GrosmontAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15349119605741445692noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8920774344886968587.post-64749935428783726042016-09-24T12:23:00.001-07:002016-09-24T12:23:23.480-07:00Ceremonial Lower Darwen Coal Fired 76084<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Back in July 2013 at the Return to Steam speechifying our President, Steve Davies MBE carried with him a carrier bag and with the phrase "If 76084 cannot go to Lower Darwen then Lower Darwen has come to 76084" he proceeded to take a brick out of the bag. The brick he assured us was from the site of the former Motive Power Depot.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">So Steve is no stranger to scratting around the undergrowth above Ewood Park next to the Blackburn to Bolton line. He even took your author up there on one occasion just to show me how easy it was to find old relics from the past use of the site. Another geological dig around the site of the coaling stage of the former home of 76084 revealed several pieces of coal that had been hidden there for over half a century. Steve found another carrier bag and left the site with the coal.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Making himself available for the Loaded Test run on Tuesday, 20 September 2016, what better way to start the day than by ceremonially shovelling his Lower Darwen coal into 76084's firebox.
And so a momentous day for 76084 and all involved in her restoration, return to steam and now return to the mainline loaded began. There are numerous videos of the Loaded Test Run around the Carnforth - Blackburn - Carnforth loop on the internet. Click here to view a playlist.

The next day 76084 travelled over to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway to take part in their Autumn Steam Gala. She will return to the North Norfolk Railway at the end of March 2017.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15349119605741445692noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8920774344886968587.post-7000790200333185572016-06-29T11:42:00.002-07:002016-06-29T11:42:37.348-07:00Ready for the 'Mainline'

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">76084's winter maintenance this year was not just her annual maintenance to keep her running through this next season but a concerted effort by the Maintenance Team to do all that AND get her ready for the 'mainline'.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">The list of jobs for the latter item was quite extensive and has been covered elsewhere in this blog. One item that couldn't be finished during the Maintenance Team's Jan/Feb visits was the fitting of self-cleaning equipment in the smokebox. Steam locomotives running on the mainline have to have this fitted for amongst other things it reduces the possibility of them causing lineside fires. The self cleaning equipment was subsequently fitted by the staff at North Norfolk Railway's Weybourne Shed.

SC Plate now fitted to 76084

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">The background to this is as follows: British Railways Standard Classes of steam locomotives (and some big four classes built/rebuilt during BR days) used a simple technology, where a robust mesh grille was incorporated into the smokebox, forming a filter between the front tubeplate and the exhaust. Any large pieces of 'char' passing through the boiler tubes would tend to be broken up on impact with the mesh, creating finer particles that would be swept up the chimney instead of accumulating in the bottom of the smokebox. This did not negate the need to clean out the smokebox but reduced the amount of work that had to be done. In the best case, smokebox cleaning could be avoided between boiler washouts, typically at intervals of two weeks.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">To inform shed staff that less work was required on the smokeboxes of locos so fitted an 'SC' plate was affixed underneath the shedcode plate as shown in our photos.

Now here's the rub. I have seen misguided comments in online photograph libraries saying locomotives carrying an 'SC' plate had a Scottish connection as 'Sc' stood for that British Railways Region. I have recently been asked whilst stood by 76084 'What is 76084's Scottish connection?' So I duly explained there was none.<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

Standing on Holt Station awaiting time I was stood leeward of 76084's chimney chatting with interested onlookers last week as a light covering of ash settled on heads and shoulders indicating that the self cleaning system was working satisfactorily.

76084 is ready and even eager to work over the national network metals and that day is exactly 6 weeks away (subject to availability as always) as I write this article.

10 August 2016 will be another notable milestone for the locomotive and the Company. Thanks to all shareholders, supporters and our partners - the North Norfolk Railway - for getting us this far.

One precaution we have to take when going main line is to prevent our crew poking something through the open aperture when under the overhead power lines on electrified lines and causing what could be a fatal short circuit.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Having fitted and passed all three main line safety systems fit for use we have turned our attention to 76084’s mechanical soundness for main line running. Not having the experience within 76084 Locomotive Company Limited we enlisted the assistance of other engineers more accustomed to maintaining main line steam locomotives to give our little ‘Pocket Rocket’ an assessment to identify anything that might need repairing or replacing prior to a main line debut.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">We did ask and were quite surprised when the job list came back and was over 80 items in total. Granted some of the jobs were small and could be completed in a short time with little expense but there was the other extreme. One job that typified this was to check and test all locomotive and tender springs - 12 in total. The tender springs are on the outside of the tender frame and are physically smaller than the 6 locomotive driving wheel springs which are inside the loco frames and much more difficult to handle being larger and therefore heavier.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">We had thought of paying someone to do all the work but financial considerations prevented this. So our Engineering Team with assistance from the North Norfolk Railway set about tackling the list of jobs in mid-January 2016 (Week 1)at the Weybourne Workshops of the NNR.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">All the 12 springs mentioned above were removed by John Riley, Roger Norris, Mel & Malc Rutter. Two were found to have broken leafs. There is one school of thought that puts this down to the loading and offloading of the vehicles when being moved from Railway to Railway as undue strain is put on the springs during these operations. After steam cleaning the heavy springs they were palletted and sent off for repair and testing.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">All the wheel axles have to be MPI tested for soundness and this could only be done with bare metal surfaces so all 7 had to be stripped of paint in Week 1 (well done Malc Rutter), tested and repainted in mid-February by your author during Week 2.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">The motion had to be checked thoroughly so was taken off and carefully measured at the time in Week 1 with Dave Rollo doing a superb job of the measurements under the watchful eye of our VAB Inspector John Graham. The cylinders were re-bored too. This is a specialist job and Ian Riley & Son were employed to do 76084’s.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">After the hard physical work of Week 1 various parts were ordered, under the guidance of Dave Husband and Mel Rutter, such as piston rings for the loco steam brake cylinder and new bushes for the expansion link trunnions. These would come together for Week 2 in mid-February.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">During Week 2 with Roger Norris, John Riley and me affectionately know as the 'Spring Team, all Loco and Tender springs were refitted with tender springs receiving coat of paint to spruce them up. Whilst Dave Husband and Mel Rutter put lots of effort into refitting both Mechanical Lubricators and Atomisers after they had been serviced. They were tested and refilled with correct lubricant. All Driving Wheel and Pony wheel axlebox underkeeps were drained, cleaned and new side felts fitted. New ‘Armstrong Oiler’ Pads were also fitted.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">4 new Expansion Link Trunion bushes having been manufactured and have been fitted to the support brackets by NNR staff.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">The 'Steam Brake Cylinder' was removed in Week 1 and refurbished before refitting in Week 2. This is so very easy to say in one sentence but the effort taken to do the refurbishment and refitting was huge. I can now point to a steam break cylinder on my OO gauge model of 76084 and inform those in earshot how much work goes into fitting what looks like a tiny piece of equipment.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">The front end of 76084 was not overlooked during this Winter Maintenance with a new Front Draw Hook purchased and fitted, this was followed by a modified AWS guard plate being fitted to protect the equipment from impact damage by the front screw coupling. The Front buffer beam was rubbed down by ‘Billy Wizz’ and repainted by Brian Ashby, NNR Painter to a very high standard. The fitting of the new Smokebox 'Self-cleaner' components has been started by NNR staff. This is an important piece of kit as it will minimise the possibility of lineside fires in hot weather on the main line – something that Network Rail are REALLY sensitive about.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">In the cab a Roof Ventilator Guard has been manufactured and fitted. This is to prevent footplate staff poking anything up through the open ventilator, when operating beneath the 25Kv Over-Head Centenary. Above the Driver’s position the technical details that the Driver needs to know have been painted.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">In the case of the tender taking on water on the main line is fraught with issues so low level fillers have been completed by NNR and the pipework given several coats of paint during Week 2. All 6 Tender 'Timken Bearings' have been carefully greased.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">A lot more has had to be done on 76084 during this Winter Break on the NNR than any other. I’m really pleased that for once I could assist and get my hands dirty during Week 2. I wrote daily articles during the week but time was limited as we had to spend long evenings on missionary work in the various Public Houses in Sheringham.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">I love Suffolk Cider which is one reason to go to East Anglia any time of year but to go and work long days on 76084 and drink cider in the evening in great company even in mid-winter was an experience I will treasure for sometime.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

Our last day was memorable for a number of reasons:

We had a visit from 92 year old Alex Scott who we met in the pub last night (Thursday). He had us in stitches with his less than politically-correct jokes and enthralled by his railway tales. On his visit to the Workshops he brought us each a copy of his book which we wanted him to sign but had to settle for a group photo with him in the centre.

The steam brake cylinder having been refitted the connecting rod was put back in place. On the floor of the pit it looked almost harmless but trying to fit it was heavy work.

Dave and Mel refitted and connected up the mechanical lubricators. Priming the systems then followed. I learnt that on lubricator does the cylinders and the other the motion with different types of oil going into each.

The new fire hose water pipework on the tender was primed with black primer early doors then given a gloss coat by Ken, one of the NNR volunteers.

Adrian Vaughan visited the Workshops with his camera (film not digital) and I nearly photobombed his shot of work in the Machine Shop. I was told by Paul our fitter in a quiet voice who he was when he walked in and Paul used very reverential tones exuding much respect. I've since been in touch with Adrian and obtained some of his superb monochrome 76084 related images.

Nicky, another of the NNR volunteers, came to say goodbye to us and brought some chocolate mini-rolls to sweeten the parting.

Some of us caught the crossing of service trains around 2:30 pm at the same time meeting an avid reader of this blog and witnessing how territorial male Robins are about their patch.

Back to the engine and the underkeeps that had been soaking in oil were refitted

I finished the greasing of all the 100 (approx.) moving parts of the loco that needed doing ticking them off on an outline diagram of the loco.

The tender springs were given a quick top coat of paint.

It took several of us to refit the protector plate behind the drawhook which protects an AWS magnet from the damaging swing of the front screw coupling.

Parts of the smokebox self-cleaning screens were fitted by Paul.

92 year old Alex Scott in the centre stands by 76084 in Weybourne Workshops with Roger Norris on his right and John Riley on his left.

A few jobs remain before 76084 can return to traffic but they are now in the capable hand of the NNR engineers. I'm looking forward to the Steam Gala in a couple of weeks time that should see a bevy of engines performing with 76084 amongst them.

We met up with members of the NNR Management Team in the evening to celebrate a good week's work over a homely meal in the Tynesider Club before moving on to finish off the Jameisons in the Lobster Inn.

Thank you, Sheringham for putting up with us for a week and the staff at Weybourne for making us welcome amongst you.

Today I painted the axles (again) as well as giving the newly installed springs a quick coat of gloss. I've primed some new pipework underneath and grease all round.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Elsewhere the steam brake has been installed with help from the NNR paid staff. The expansion motion system has been neatly put together by Mel Rutter. Dave Husband has been working in the smokebox and getting filthy for his troubles. Roger Norris has been doing fitting work and John Riley sorting out the sanding boxes.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">We had a visit from new acquiantences met the night before in what is becoming our favourite watering hole, the Lobster Inn in Sheringham. Lucy and Andrew were most impressed with what the North Norfolk Railway is doing and more especially what 76084 Loco co Ltd is doing with our engine.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">This evening we met up with a 91 year old driver called Alex Scott who had us in ches with his tails of yesteryear. He has even fired on the Turbomotive (which will not mean much to many people but to those in the know is really something).

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Last day tommorrow with lots to finish off. Will post lots of photos

The 'Springs Team' of John Riley, Roger Norris and (sometimes) Eric Bond have finally completed the arduous task of fitting 6 springs on the tender (easy peasy) and 6 springs on the loco (not so easy peasy).
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Mel Rutter has fettled the steam brake with Dave Husband refitting the lubrication systems. Mel Chamberlain fitted the new front draw hook.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">There have been lots of jobs done or started too many to list here but these are the highlights (or those jobs that I got personally involved in!!).

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">The loco was jacked at the front to enable the remaining springs to be refitted by Roger Noris, John Riley and Steve Greeno.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">The tender wheels have had white lines applied at 120 degrees on their rear surfaces as tyre slip indicators.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">The tender roller bearings have been filled with grease by John Oldcorn with help from his son Nat.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">I have painted the tender axles twice - once with primer and once with red undercoat.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Prep work has been done for the replacement of the front draw hook

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">and much more besides

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">We have had the help of nnr volunteers as well as the Workshop staff. The image shown here has Nicky Carter (volunteer) removing bolts form a cover whilst others manage to down a brew. Thanks Nicky and Ken for your efforts this afternoon. Tomorrow smokebox modifications so 76084 can claimto be 'SC' - self-cleaning.

So in Week 1 all the springs on the loco and tende were removed for testing and where necessary repair. That's 12 springs which are quite heavy and at time of removal quite filthy.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">The springs being tested and repaired were returned to Weybourne last week and are much cleaner. So I have got involved.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Led by Mel Rutter and Dave Husband, the Engineering Team in this instance is made up of John Riley and Roger Norris with input also from John Oldcorn. And me!!
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">After a briefing session in the Messroom at Weybourne on Sunday having delivered the new parts to the workshop Monday was the start of the real work. Introductions to the very friendly and helpful North Norfolk Railway workshop staff over John R, Roger and myself (The Spring Team) set to on the tender springs.We were later joined by Steve Greeno and NNR volunteers Nicky and Kieran. After one or two minor delays - one caused by me misplacing an important part around mid morning we had all 6 springs in place by mid-afternoon.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">I couldn't tell you what the rest of the Team did on Day 1 but when we left at 17:45 for a well-earned shower and meal the mood of the Team was high so the Team Leaders were pleased with progress. The main line
In the wider main line field there have been instances of late where even large Class 7 locos have come to grief and stalled due to combinations of circumstances. So it is important to establish 76084's load capabilities.

And so following the revelation that an article about 76084 appeared in a 2012 edition of Back Track magazine as discussed on the main website here, I set to to find myself a copy. I am something of a black hole when it comes to anything 76084 just swallowing up any titbits of information and always wanting to have the original magazine in my collection if 76084 is mentioned certainly if that mention is about British Railways days.

The article in question was actually revisited in a recent edition of the Keithley and Worth Valley Railway's house magazine 'Push & Pull' which brought it to the attention of several 76084 Loco Co Ltd shareholders who independently let me know about it. The author of the KWVR article also a 76084 shareholder sent me the text which allowed me to put the story on the main website.

So what do you think our example of a 'Pocket Rocket' can haul comfortably? 6 or 7 perhaps.

It's my personal opinion that again a certain set of circumstances came together in 1957 that really put 76084 to the test but was it? The BR Standard 4 2-6-0s were new to the area in 1957. Could it be that enquiring minds, possibly from the local Operating Department, wanted to see just what such a loco could achieve prior to accepting a batch into their fleet?

Going back to the original article I searched hard for a copy of the relevant Back Track and eventually found one on eBay. Having paid for it the vender then informed me he hadn't kept his records up to date and the particular issue was no longer in stock. But the vender was one of the good sort and promised to source one for me and he DID. Ironically from Ingrow on the KWVR.

Now I'm happy on two counts. I know exactly what a BR Standard 4 can achieve and I've got the article in my collection as a record.

If you find anything about 76084 out there please do let me know about it - I do love these quests.
The problem is I cannot pass a secondhand book shop without
buying something railway related. When I do buy a railway book it has to fit my
criteria which is:

Anything to do with 76084

Anything to do with BR Standards

Anything to do with Motive Power Depots

So today we visited a large ‘antiques centre’ and I was overwhelmed
with the number of railway books I found without really looking hard. Usually
at such places I race ahead whilst my dear wife devours each stall. Today it
was the opposite. I started looking through collections of photographs which
really is time consuming in the hope of seeing anything that fits my criteria.

I came to one stall and a book called ‘BRITISH RAILWAYS
Engine Sheds – London Midland Matters’ by Chris Hawkins, John Hooper and George
Reeve which only ticks my third box took my fancy. I flicked through the pages
as you do and thought this could be interesting so carried it round for the
next 2 plus hours (lunch was in there somewhere). I found a limited edition OO
gauge bus for my 1960’s steam/diesel crossover layout and was content to leave
the establishment with 2 purchases.

As I drank the obligatory brew on arriving home I thumbed
through the book. Being mildly dyslexic I had a little difficulty with the
Times New Roman typeface (a well known fact which also goes to explain why this
blog is produced in something else). I had no difficulty, however when arriving
at page 85 on recognising the Midland Coaling Stage of Hellified Shed nor the
locomotive posing by it. To my complete surprise and delight it was 76084. The
photograph was taken by a T J Edgington in 1961. Interestingly, 76084 has only 2 Overhead Wires Warning flashes on her front steps.

Going back to my criteria for railway book buying two boxes
are now ticked and in the words of the prophet Meatloaf ‘2 out of 3 ain’t bad’.
This new book will be added to my collection of all things 76084/Lower Darwen.

I’ve yet to put the bus on my layout – that will have to
wait till another time.

The title on the slide is '76084 on Shap' but is it really?

Reproduced here is the best quality resolution we could get and there appears to have been some photshopping on the image. What is the white area over the cabside number? It certainly is not steam! and there is a distinct change in colour/texture on the left steps where the overhead wires flash should be. Add the fact that there is not a second one on the right hand side and this author is led to believe some mis-representation has been going on. We are not pointing a finger at Colour Rail, far from it. This image has been taken from a slide as is. How do you alter 35mm slides without damaging them

Look closely at the smokebox number plate. What do you think the last 2 digits are? It could be a shedmate of '84. And do you know the working from the designation on the smokebox?

If anyone can throw any light on this or even help us 'join the dots' we would very much appreciate it.

As 76084 prepares to go main line there is some debate about loads she will be able to haul. We know she (almost) managed a 14 coach holiday train back in the day. The real pulling capacity of a Standard 4 Mogul has to be much less than that but certainly more than 2. Then again we are talking here of going over Shap.

Thoughts on a postcard or below please.

PS Our thanks to Colour Rail for allowing us to use this image in this way.

Whilst 76084 received some attention during her stay at Woodham Brothers' Barry Scrapyard in the form of a coating of red lead not so her Mark 2A tender. Indeed, her tender provides an interesting view into who had ideas about preserving either the tender itself or the loco and tender together.

I've just come across some interesting images new to me taken at Barry. Most of them are familiar Driver's side front three-quarter or from the front showing the other locos she was stored with but one photo shows the Driver's side rear three-quarter view with the tender nearest the camera and showing loads of daubed on messages about (future) ownership.

The image I'm referring to is contained in an album part of John Kendrick's Photo Gallery which is, as you can see, online. Let me take you directly to the image here. Study the various messages on the side of 76084's tender (and it is 76084 evidenced by the now pink coat of red lead). How many different railways can you see written on the tender?

As an aside to the main topic of this article you can clearly see the 'Horwich Lining' technique applied to tenders painted there which has been faithfully repeated during 76084's restoration. That is, the rear vertical lining comes down short of the tank end in line with the step on the tank shoulder so that the early BR Crest can be applied over a single horizontal line of rivet heads and not a cross of them.

HRPS stands for the Hallamshire Railway Preservation Society who reserved 76084 in 1974 and spent time painting the loco in undercoat. A move that ultimately came to naught as the Society's Treasurer used their funds to buy a Brake Van instead!!

Bluebell Railway is plain to see dated 6 December 1979. This is interesting because the other cabside has E.L.R on it before it was undercoated in 1974 and the 3 September 1977 edition of 'The Barry List' has her reserved for the East Lancashire Locomotive Society.
The Bluebell Railway also 'bought' BR 2MT 78059 a few days later - on 12 December 1979 as shown in this image. This number appears in our image towards the rear of the tender. Perhaps the master plan was the 2MT + this tender as a pair. Who knows? 78059 did make it to the Bluebell but without this tender and now forms the basis from which a BR Standard 2MT 2-6-2 tank 84030 will be built.

NYMR is there twice! One of them has SOLD with the date 29 January 1980 next to it. How many times did this tender get SOLD?

As with so many initiatives concerning Barry locos none of these came to fruition and Pip Rollin stepped in in late 1982 to buy both loco and tender and as they say the rest is history.

The 76084 Locomotive Company Limited has just passed its 18th birthday and is looking forward to seeing her perform on the BIG railway in the no-too-distant future.

He said he would sent me a copy.

Because of all the things going on during that fabulous month of October on the GCR, the memory of the conversation faded (not to mention the advancement of age and more senior moments than I care to admit to). So imagine my surprise and delight when Alan Smalley got in touch with me and did indeed send me the said image reproduced here for your own perusal.

Here is 76084 right at the very back of the Fleetwood Maintenance Shed and in bits.

Never mind the poser in front of the engine. Have a look around the various parts of the image. She bears not only the original 24D Lower Darwen shedplate but also her 'SC' (self-cleaning) designation plate. The year is 1958. What is unusual is that both piston and valve covers are off suggesting both are being inspected. It is also interesting to note that the tender has been uncoupled too.

Valve inspections were and are more frequent than piston inspections then taking place after 10 to 15,000 miles whilst piston inspections were normally at a frequency of around 20 to 25,000 miles running if I remember rightly. In 1957 from new 76084 ran 24,637 miles and was out of service for repairs for 21 days. In 1958 she ran a total of 27,353 miles but was out of service for 49 days for repairs. Could the work going on here be some of those 49 days?

76084 transferred to Lancaster Green Ayre (24J) on 4 October 1958. Could this work be being performed immediately prior to the transfer so that the Lancaster loco crews would have an engine in fair fettle to try out or could it be that they'd run her a few times and considered a full valves and pistons inspection was necessary?

If anyone can shed (pun intended) any further light on this we'd appreciate it. Whatever the reason for the dual inspection it does make for a very interesting photo and speculation as to why.

Thanks, Alan for taking the time and sharing this with 76084 Loco. Co. Ltd.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15349119605741445692noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8920774344886968587.post-17147996498655427592015-05-21T05:39:00.001-07:002015-05-21T05:39:24.990-07:0076084 and ShedplatesDid 76084 ever run with a shed code plate other than 24D or 10H for Lower Darwen?
When new 76084 carried 24D 'SC'. I have seen 'SC' referred to as the 'the Scottish connection' in comments on one photo showing 2 locos with 'SC' plates. On Guard's whistles for the Scottish Region they were stamped 'BR (Sc)' so I can see some confusion coming into play but 'SC' under a shedplate meant self-cleaning and was there in the early days of the technology to inform cleaners on shed not to bother emptying the smokebox of fly-ash as there wouldn't be any there.

Just as an aside here we intend fitting the screens which makes a smokebox self-cleaning to 76084 prior to her running on the mainline. This addition will drastically reduce the likelihood of lineside fires from her exhaust which seems to be a problem for Network Rail in dry spells
.

Back to our main theme. 76084 went to two other North West sheds between early October 1958 and late March 1959 (totalling around 6 months) these being Lancaster Green Ayre and Skipton. We are about to share with you a photo of 76084 at Fleetwood which is far from being just another photo of a loco on shed and as such deserves to be the subject of another blog article. 76084 still carries 24D 'SC' in this 1958 photo. Moving on several years in 1966 when now at Sutton Oak, St. Helens, all her sisters from that shed had lost their 8G 'plates but 76084 still carried 10H.

When did she lose the 'SC'? Could it have been when at Lancaster (about 2 months total in 2 sessions) or Skipton (one 4 month stretch)? Did she ever run with 24J or 24G respectively? Or did the BR Midland Region management of the day plan not to take off the 24D 'plate as the periods at either shed were short or experimental?

What we do know is that eventually she wore 8G chalked or hand-painted on the smokebox before the short period at Wigan Springs Branch but never an 8G 'plate as they had all gone missing!!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15349119605741445692noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8920774344886968587.post-57248005885320579172015-05-21T04:15:00.002-07:002015-05-21T04:15:40.211-07:00Mainline Gets CloserWe launched the 'Go Mainline' Appeal on the day 76084 returned to revenue earning service on the North Norfolk Railway. That was in July 2013.

We are pleased to announce that we have raised sufficient funds to install 2 of the 3 technologies needed.

A Train Protection and Warning System (TPWS) is a must on today's modern national railway system. TPWS has been around since rollout in 2003 and is attributed with significantly improving railway operational safety since its full roll-out in 2003.

On-Board Train Monitoring and Recording (OTMR) provides a complete record of each state change of all monitored controls. Data recording takes place in a crash survivable memory module equivalent to a plane's 'Black Box', with journeys in excess of 24 hours duration easily accommodated. The data can is utilised for safety monitoring procedures and the analysis of operational performance.

Our last big push is to fund GSM-R - Global System for Mobile Communications-Railway which is an international wireless communications standard for railway communication and applications. It is used for communication between train and railway regulation control centres. The system can perform at speed without any communication loss. The train maintains a modem connection to the control centre at all times operating with higher priority than normal users. If the modem connection is lost, the train will automatically stop.

So. Please do have a look at our 'Go Mainline' Appeal page and see if there is something to sponsor that takes your fancy. Alternatively, you can donate, buy merchandise or even buy shares (joining the 76084 family).

let's get our 'Pocket Rocket' on the mainline in 2015.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15349119605741445692noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8920774344886968587.post-53411493951730218612015-04-02T01:32:00.000-07:002015-04-02T01:33:37.000-07:00A Day with 76084Ever since 76084 returned to steam on the North Norfolk Railway one particular shareholder has had a longing to take a party of friends and family for a driver experience day on 76084.

On Wednesday, 25 March 2015 Jim Higman's wish came true. The 'party of friends and family' in the end came down to Jim and his son. The upside of the small party was that they both got to drive 76084 for 2 round trips and fire her for 2 more.
The photos show Jim next to 76084 at Sheringham ahead of a day's pleasant graft on the footplate and below Higman Jnr (sorry I don't know your first name) literally in the Driving Seat with a hand on the Regulator receiving instruction whilst passing through the Norfolk countryside. The observant amongst you will notice two handles for sounding either of the whistles that 76084 is currently fitted with.

76084 went on to provide motive power for charters on the following Thursday and Friday too.

Said Jim afterwards "The whole experience was wonderful. The North Norfolk Railway staff were very good and accommodating right from the 'Meet and Greet' to the end of the day. There wasn't a cloud in the sky and I'm really pleased to now have first hand knowledge of how well 76084 performs."

Just recently we have been able to add a significant number of new ones and for this we are indebted to shareholder Peter Eastham and his friend Bernard Bond (no relation to yours truly).

Bernard resided in Great Harwood close to the Goods Yard that sadly no longer exists there and is something of an expert on the 'Padiham Loop'. He has provided us with a few sightings in 1960 through Peter who has added his own to the list also. Peter has lived next to the Blackburn-Hellifield line for most of his life and regularly saw 76084 pass by on different duties bu primarily as the 'Whalley Banker'. As the line approaches Blackburn through the village of Langho there is a significant gradient and banking locos were provided to assist heavily loaded trains up and over this incline. From Peter's observations 76084 was a regular performer on this duty. So regular that Peter often neglected to record seeing her which is understandable.

Having put Bernard's and Peter's sightings into our list we have a total of 88 sightings.

But have a look at this chart which shows there are some significant gaps in her history.

So 88 sightings is good but there must be more out there. Did you see 76084 between April 1957 and December 1967? If you did we'd love to hear from you. Please don't be shy!!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15349119605741445692noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8920774344886968587.post-39165697073519518052015-02-25T06:42:00.002-08:002015-02-25T06:42:34.815-08:00‘LOWER DARWEN’ on the Bufferbeam

was running down its steam locomotive overhaul work and 8F 2-8-0 48756 was the last being despatched after overhaul on 4 May 1964. It seems
logical that Swindon became responsible for members of the Standard 4 2-6-0

So here it is:

Taken on 3rd July 1966 with from left to right 41286, 76078, 76084 and 76077. The last two, of course, still exist but in very different stages of restoration.

76084 still carries her 10H Lower Darwen shedcode as well as the text on her bufferbeam some 15 months after transferring to Sutton Oak.

Not one of the locos has their overhead wires warning flashes in the same formation/place!!

Thanks again to Peter Winstanley for providing this stunning image of 76084 and her sisters.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15349119605741445692noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8920774344886968587.post-4524576848048683832015-02-07T07:51:00.004-08:002015-02-24T06:40:28.638-08:00BR Standards not so StandardIt is really nice to see 76084's class-mate and one-time Shed-mate, 76079 back in action on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. '79 in a previous life (under the ownership of Ian Riley) was mainline certified. She will be part of the NYMR fleet running into Whitby from Pickering.

Wouldn't it be really nice if both 76079 and 76084 got together on Network Rail metals and double headed a few steam charters?

We can but dream.

When '79 and '84 were shedmates at Sutton Oak Motive Power Depot at St. Helens there were a number of photographs taken of the enhanced population of these BR Standard 2-6-0 4MT locos. A much published image shows 76079 front and proud. Recently, an image with 76084 front and proud has come to light. Taken in early July 1966 it represents the only recorded sighting the 76084 Locomotive Company Limited has on their website for that year. But one thing caught the eye of this viewer.

British Railways built 999 'Standard' locomotives with many parts being interchangable. When it came to protecting locomen from overhead wires warning flashes were placed at eye level on engines to warn of the danger. This was half way through the BR Standard Locomotive's short BR life span.

So here are 3 locomotives of the same class (2-6-0 4MT numbers 76077, 76078 and 76084) at the front of Sutton Oak Shed. There does not seem to be a standard way of placing the Overhead Wire Flashes!!

Which one is 76084? If you know anything about '84 she stands out quite clearly.

We will share the BIG picture with you shortly.

With thanks to Peter Winstanley for providing another stunning image of 76084.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15349119605741445692noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8920774344886968587.post-81005504576868559192014-12-24T12:20:00.000-08:002014-12-25T05:16:46.846-08:00Will 76084 go mainline in 2015?76084 Locomotive Company Limited has been running a 'Go Mainline' Appeal for over a year now. What progress has been made?

Enough funding has been obtained through the sponsorship scheme to fit all the Train Protection & Warning System (Mainline Lite in some places) and almost all of the On-Train Monitoring and Recording System. Many of the parts are on order for these. The Company now need to push for GSM-R (Global System Mobile Communications - Railway) funding. With help from shareholders and supporters alike this can be achieved.

76084 has a Support Coach waiting in the wings for the day she hauls a mainline charter. 76084 has been allocated the TOPS running number 98484. Preparations are in hand to recruit a Support Crew near to the time she goes mainline.

<span 19.6000003814697px="" line-height:="">So getting back to the question in the title. Knowing how these things pan out let's say mid-2015 for a mainline debut but it will be highly dependent on a number of things falling into place. So watch this space.
<span 19.6000003814697px="" line-height:="">

<span 19.6000003814697px="" line-height:="">I'm frightened to book any holidays next summer as I want to be on the first charter she pulls. Can you help us get ALL the funding in place? Follow our '12 Days of Christmas' to see if there is something you could fund.
<span 19.6000003814697px="" line-height:="">

<span 19.6000003814697px="" line-height:="">See you on the mainline in 2015.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15349119605741445692noreply@blogger.com0
